### Cohesion (1-5)
How well ideas connect and flow throughout the essay.
- 5: Seamless transitions, clear logical progression, unified whole
- 4: Strong connections, minor lapses in flow
- 3: Adequate connections, some abrupt shifts or gaps
- 2: Weak connections, often disjointed
- 1: No clear connections between ideas

### Syntax (1-5)
Sentence structure variety and effectiveness.
- 5: Varied, sophisticated sentence structures that enhance meaning
- 4: Good variety, mostly effective structures
- 3: Some variety, occasional awkward constructions
- 2: Limited variety, frequent awkward sentences
- 1: Simple or fragmented sentences throughout
