Science Standards Written as Things Students Do
The Next Generation Science Standards describe science learning as performance expectations — statements of what a student should be able to do, rather than what they should know. Each one braids three dimensions: a science and engineering practice, a disciplinary core idea, and a crosscutting concept. Many states use them, several under their own name. Across all four disciplines, the practice most often assessed in writing is argument from evidence — claim, evidence and reasoning, marked against a rubric rather than a mark scheme. Crosscutting evidence is usually one or two sentences rather than a section, which is why it gets under-credited; tagging a criterion to it means that sentence is found and held against the right dimension.
